This set is an addendum to our Essential Mask set; with it you can paint up a few Black Sheep blown-hood Corsairs: 443, 735, 740, 795, 883, 884, 875, and of course Boyington’s publicity photo aircraft, 86 Lucybelle.

Included in the download are designs for the aircraft numbers on the fuselage sides and on the forward gear doors. Also included are the stars and bars without borders for 740 and 735, and the early star seen on the bottom port wing of 740. It appears 740 received a replacement wing from an early birdcage with the insignia in all 6 positions.

Use our Essential Mask set for the standard insignia, wing walks, clear parts, wheels, and prop tips. With both, the only decals you’ll need are stencils, victory flags, and personal markings.

VMF 214 pilots weren’t assigned specific aircraft. According to Boyington’e memoir, Baa Baa Black Sheep, pilots walked the flight line and jumped into whatever aircraft the crew chief confirmed was ready. Pictures show Boyington returning from missions in 833 and 740. Bolt flew 875 for a double victory, and FFoulkes was lost in 443. 795 appears in a picture parked at Piva Yoke with the port wing extended and the starboard wing folded. At last you can build your Corsair with one wing up and one down, and no one can claim it never appeared that way.
