1/32 P-51D Invasion Stripes for the Tamiya Mustang
If you’re building an 8th or 9th AF P-51D, this download gets you mask designs to paint any variation of invasion stripes seen on P-51Ds. Included are full lower wing D-Day stripes and upper ones for the few P-51Ds that arrived in theater early enough to get them.
The download also includes two versions of fuselage stripe masks. One includes full stripes that continue across the top of the fuselage. You can use these for any early D that had the full strips, or for later Ds that had the upper stripes removed. When crews removed the upper stripes there were many variations of where they ended. We’ve designed the mask to that you can just use a straight piece tape to mask off your lower stripes anywhere your reference photos illustrate.
The second version of the fuselage mask includes just lower stripes with the thin space between the national insignia and the stripes. This style was seen on many later P-51Ds. Use either fuselage set to portray the partial black-white-black stripes seen on many P-51Ds in late ‘44-early ‘45.
Whatever arrangement of invasion stripes you need, you can get it done with this download. Included are four 8×12 inch (203.2×304.8 mm) SVG files, DXF copies for Silhouette, and a PDF Placement Guide.

Both fuselage masks include full insignia to make sure the stars and bars aligns precisely according to where factory instructions position them. Wing insignia are available on our Essential Mask set.
Based on the pictures we’ve studied, Mustang wing stripes differed in placement. We’ve designed our masked to place them slightly outboard, which appears common to Mustangs put in service later in 1944. Earlier Mustags, including D-5s and 10s in service just after D-day, often shoe the stripes a bit more inboard.
Rather than increasing the price by offering different sets, we’ve designed our wing stripe masks so you can slide them along the flap hinge lines. Position them wherever you reference picture suggest.
